Fortem Wins Best Retrofit Initiative at Northern Housing Awards
Published 13th May 2025
Fortem is proud to announce that we have been named the winner of the Best Retrofit Initiative at the 2025 Northern Housing Awards. The award recognises our outstanding partnership with Sanctuary in delivering a landmark £9 million retrofit programme in Shiregreen, Sheffield.
This award celebrates not only the technical excellence of the project, but also our commitment to improving lives, reducing fuel poverty, and creating lasting social value in the communities we serve.
Transforming Homes and Lives in Shiregreen
Shiregreen, a community facing economic and social challenges, is now the focus of one of the most impactful retrofit initiatives in the region. Our work has delivered meaningful improvements to more than 1,200 homes, exceeding the original scope of 734 properties.
Utilising a fabric-first approach, the project included the installation of external wall insulation, solar PV panels, loft insulation, and low-energy lighting, all aimed at reaching an EPC rating of C or higher, with an average SAP score target of 72.
One resident saw their energy bill drop from £266 to just £87 a month - clear proof of the real world impact this project is making.
Putting People First
At the heart of the programme is a resident first philosophy. Our dedicated Customer Liaison Team ensured 99% resident satisfaction, delivering personalised support, timely communication, and community engagement initiatives - from local BBQs to energy efficiency workshops.
Special consideration was given to vulnerable residents, with services such as winter warmer packs and mental health sensitive engagement practices ensuring everyone felt safe and supported during the works.
A Model for the Future
This initiative wasn’t just about upgrading homes, it was about building trust, opportunity, and a better future. The project created new jobs, supported local apprenticeships, and engaged schools through employability programmes, while also attracting the attention of Sheffield City Council, who visited the site to explore its replicability.
Winning this award is a testament to the passion, innovation, and collaborative spirit of everyone involved, from our teams on the ground to our partners at Sanctuary.
“Fortem have worked amazingly with us over the last year and without their flexibility and understanding, it would not be the success it is today.”
– Alexander Ashton, Head of Energy Efficiency, Sanctuary
