Fortem hosted their annual Management Trainee awards on Friday 16th November at the Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel in London. The awards are held to recognise the excellent contributions of the management trainees and celebrate those that have graduated from the scheme. The awards presented this year were Fortem’s Got Talent, Mentor of the Year, the Marcus Armstrong Award, Trainee Challenge winner and of course the Fortem Trainee of the Year.

The day started with the trainees arriving at the hotel for a double-decker bus tour around London. The bus tour took the trainees around some of London’s most iconic sites including The London Eye, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square and many more. The bus returned back to the venue for lunch and the start of the awards. Before proceedings, Fortem’s 8 Graduate Trainees were recognised for their hard work and achievements during the length of their traineeship. Their journey has just started with Fortem as they can now get stuck into their new roles.

Last year’s Trainee of the Year, Jake Swift, delivered a speech to start the ceremony and focused on his time at Fortem and what he learnt whilst on the programme. He congratulated all the finalists on their journey so far and offered them some advice that had helped him get to where he is today.

Fortem’s Got Talent
The first award that was presented was Fortem’s Got Talent. Fortem’s Got Talent gives an opportunity to those already in the business to obtain a place on their prestigious Management Trainee scheme. The winners are given the opportunity to develop their career through Fortem.

Mentor of the Year
The second award presented was Mentor of the Year. This award takes a step back from the trainees directly and reflects upon the efforts that go into developing Fortem’s trainees by their mentors.

Marcus Armstrong Award
The next award that was presented was the Marcus Armstrong Award, which gives trainees the chance to vote for their fellow trainees who have supported them throughout the year. It was decided this year to rename the Trainees Trainee Award to the Marcus Armstrong Award in honour of Marcus Armstrong, a Management Trainee at Fortem that was sadly lost earlier this year.

Trainee Challenge
The penultimate award presented was the winner of the Trainee Challenge. The Trainee Challenge sees trainees split into three regional teams - North, South, and Midlands. They are then asked to identify a project in the local communities that would help make a real difference to people’s lives.

Trainee of the Year
Trainee of the Year is the most prestigious award of the day. The finalists were narrowed down to a final three and did incredibly well to make it to this stage. The trainees have to submit a portfolio showing what they have learnt, how they have helped the business and how they have developed throughout their time on the programme. Once the final few were decided the three were invited to answer questions from a judging panel, who gave their verdict on who should win this award. Mick Williamson, Managing Director of Fortem, also reviewed the portfolios and helped in making the final decision of who won this award.
